Your teeth are very strong, stronger even than human bone! Even though teeth can withstand normal daily wear and tear, they’re not indestructible.

If you break a tooth or develop a large cavity, we might use a filling to fix it. If the damage is too extensive and a filling isn’t enough to protect it, your dentist in North Salt Lake may recommend a porcelain dental crown.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A porcelain dental crown is also called a “cap” because it covers the entire tooth. Placing a tooth crown does three things:

  1. It gives you a sturdy new surface to chew on
  2. Protects the tooth from further damage
  3. Restores your beautiful smile

When Would You Recommend a Dental Crown?

Some situations where Dr. Will Bates would recommend a crown are:

  • Protect a tooth when a cavity is too large for a tooth filling
  • Restore a broken or cracked tooth
  • Provide support for a tooth after a root canal
  • Restore function and appearance to a dental implant

How Long Does It Take to Get a Crown?

Dr. Bates can typically place a porcelain tooth crown in two visits to our North Salt Lake dental office. The first involves preparing the tooth, taking dental impressions, and making a temporary crown to protect the tooth while a custom lab prepares your new crown.

When your new crown is ready, you return to Serene Dentistry so we can remove the temporary, test the fit of your final crown, and cement it securely in place.

Anyone can lose a tooth, whether it’s advanced decay, gum disease, or dental trauma due to a sports injury. We offer a couple of tooth replacement options, including implants, but many of our patients turn to dental bridges to complete their smiles.

A bridge fills the gap in your smile, and Dr. Bates uses them when one tooth or two teeth in a row are missing. An artificial tooth sits in the gap and is secured on either side with crowns attached to adjacent teeth.

Why It’s Important to Replace Missing Teeth

There are several good reasons why you should replace a missing tooth as soon as possible.

  • Fill the open space and restore the symmetry and beauty of your smile
  • Restore comfortable chewing function so you can eat nutritious foods like crisp fruits and vegetables
  • Prevent dental bite problems that can cause teeth grinding (bruxism), tooth wear, and TMJ pain

We do offer other tooth replacement options like dental implants at our North Salt Lake dental office, and Dr. Bates would be happy to talk to you about them too. However, a dental bridge is an excellent choice if you don’t want to commit to the implant process or can’t get an implant due to inadequate jawbone density.
