Don’t let the fear of a root canal prevent you from seeking dental care. Together, we can keep your smile shining bright for years to come!

In this blog, we will go over what to expect during a root canal so that you can feel prepared and confident.

Root Canal Day

Are you aware that Root Canal Day is almost here? It’s that time of year when we celebrate one of dentistry’s most essential procedures! Root canals might have a reputation for being painful, but they are a great way to save a severely damaged tooth from extraction.

If you have questions or concerns about root canals, please call us! At Serene Dentistry of North Salt Lake, we take pride in providing gentle and effective root canals to our patients. By removing the infected or damaged pulp inside a tooth, we can prevent further decay and restore its function.

Symptoms That Indicate You May Need Root Canal

Have you been experiencing severe tooth pain, especially when chewing? You may have noticed that one of your teeth is particularly sensitive to hot and cold foods or drinks, swelling of the gums, or a pimple-like bump on the gums.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, scheduling an appointment with Dr. Will Bates is vital for a proper diagnosis.

The Root Canal Procedure

Here at Serene Dentistry of North Salt Lake, we are committed to ensuring your root canal procedure goes as smoothly and painlessly as possible.

Step 1: Preparation and Anesthesia

The first thing that will happen when you come in for a root canal is that Dr. Bates will numb the area with anesthesia. This will help ensure you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Once the area is numb, he will place a rubber dam around the tooth to keep it clean and dry throughout the process.

Step 2: Removing the Infected Pulp

The dentist will begin by drilling a small hole into the top of the tooth to access the inside. He will then use special tools to remove the infected pulp and any debris inside the tooth. This is part of a root canal that often causes the most anxiety, but remember that you will not feel any pain due to the anesthesia.

Step 3: Filling and Sealing the Tooth

After removing the infected pulp, the dentist will thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth. Then, he will fill it with a unique material to keep it from becoming infected again. Finally, he will seal the tooth with a filling to protect it and restore function.

Step 4: Crown Placement

Sometimes, the dentist may recommend placing a crown on the tooth after the root canal procedure is complete. This will help protect the tooth and ensure it remains solid and functional over time. A crown is typically made from porcelain or another strong material, and the dentist will custom-fit it to your individual tooth.

Step 5: Aftercare and Recovery

After your root canal procedure, taking good care of your tooth is vital to ensure proper recovery. This includes avoiding hard and chewy foods for a few days after the procedure, taking any prescribed pain medication as directed, and following any other specific instructions from your dentist.
